Healing a
Paralysed Man

Did you know...

that the Pharisees were men who followed the laws of Moses very strictly?

This story is about the healing of a paralysed man.

Jesus’s teachings were spreading far and wide.  One day He was teaching the people in Capernaum, a town on the Sea of Galilee.  Hundreds of men, women, and children crowded in the streets to listen to Him speak.

Jesus was preaching inside when some men arrived carrying their paralysed friend on a stretcher.

They wanted Jesus to help their friend and tried to push through the crowd, but there were so many people that they couldn’t find a way inside.

The men got an idea. They climbed to the rooftop, removed some tiles, and lowered the sick man down through the hole right to Jesus.

When Jesus saw the strong faith in the men, he looked at the paralysed man and said, “Son, your sins are forgiven.”

The scribes and Pharisees began questioning what Jesus did.

“Blasphemy!” they said, “This man talks like he is God!”

A blasphemy is when someone speaks badly about or insults God.

questioning Jesus

Did you know...

that during these times, there were men called scribes and Pharisees? A scribe knew about the law and could write legal documents. Pharisees were members of a group that followed the legal traditions of their fathers.  Both were experts of religious laws.

The Pharisees and scribes thought that Jesus could not forgive sins, only God alone could do that, and that made them angry.

Jesus knew what they were thinking.

He said to the Pharisees and scribes, “God has given me the authority to forgive people their sins,” He answered. “And to prove this, I will heal this man.”

Then Jesus turned to the paralysed man and said to him, “I say to you: Stand up, take up your stretcher and go on home, because you are healed.”

Immediately the man rose up in front of everyone, took the stretcher he had been laying on, and left to go to his own house, praising God.

Everyone who had seen this was amazed and filled with wonder and awe. They praised God saying over and over, “We have seen amazing things today!"
