Pharaoh and the Israelites

Did you know…

that Moses returned to Egypt to free the Hebrew slaves?

This story is about the Pharaoh and the Israelites.

Following God’s command, Moses returned to Egypt. God had told him to go to the Pharaoh and tell him to let the enslaved Israelites go. He told Moses that the Pharaoh would be very stubborn and that it would take many signs and miracles before the Pharaoh would let them go.

On the way, Moses met his brother Aaron, and together they went to Egypt.

When they arrived in Egypt, they called the leaders of Israel to a meeting.

Moses performed the miraculous signs that God had told him and this convinced them that it was God who had sent Moses and Aaron to free them.

Then Moses went to the Pharaoh and told him that God wanted the Pharaoh to release the Hebrew slaves.

The Pharaoh answered, “Who is the Lord that I should listen to Him and let Israel go? I don’t know the Lord, and I will not let the Hebrew slaves go.”

An angry Pharaoh now ordered the slaves to make bricks with no straw and they had to work much harder. He wanted them loaded down with more work so that they wouldn’t have time to listen to Moses.

Moses talked to God again. He told God how the Pharaoh was mistreating the people and how things were now much worse.

God commanded that Moses go back to the Pharaoh and again tell him to let the people of Israel leave Eygpt.

When Moses and Aaron went back to the Pharaoh, they performed the miracles to show him that it was truly God who had sent them.

When Aaron threw down Moses’ staff and it became a snake, the Pharaoh was not impressed. He called in his wise men and magicians, and they did the same thing - their rods too became snakes. But Aaron’s rod swallowed up their rods.

God had hardened the Pharaoh’s heart, since He had yet to perform many signs and miracles. Pharaoh remained stubborn. He refused to free the slaves.
