Resurrection Story
for Older Children

Did you know....

that after Jesus died, he came back to show us that there is life after death?

This is the Easter story of the resurrection of Jesus.

After Jesus died, he was taken down from the cross.

Jesus’ body was wrapped in linen cloth and put in a tomb that had been carved out of rock. The tomb was sealed and a great stone was rolled over the entrance so that no one could get in. Since Jesus had said that He would rise from the dead, Pilate had the tomb guarded by soldiers so that no one could come to steal His body.

Now, if this was the end of the Easter story, how sad it would be. But God did something wonderful. Jesus did not stay dead!

On the third day after Jesus died, Mary Magdalene and another woman came to visit the tomb. When they got close, there was an earthquake and an angel came down from heaven and rolled away the stone from the tomb. The angel glowed like lightning and his clothes were white as snow. The soldiers were so afraid that they shook with fear and fainted.

The angel said to the women, "Don't be afraid. I know you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified, but He isn't here. He has been raised from the dead, just as He said would happen." The women saw the tomb was empty.

The women were frightened but also filled with great joy.

Women empty tomb

They ran from the tomb to find the disciples to give them the angel's message.

As they went, they met Jesus and He greeted them. The women ran to Him, held His feet, and worshipped Him.

Jesus greets women

The eleven disciples went to Galilee where the angel had said Jesus would meet them. In fact, after Jesus was resurrected (wrose from the dead), Jesus appeared to the disciples a few times - when they were meeting behind locked doors, walking along a road, and eating with them. When they saw Him, some of they were not sure if it was really Jesus, they thought they were seeing a ghost.

Jesus showed them the wounds in his hands and feet. He asked them to touch Him to make sure he was not a ghost.

Jesus reminded them about what He had taught them about love and forgiveness and asked them to spread His teaching.

Jesus arisen

Jesus blessed his disciples and told them that He would be with them always, even to the end of the age, which means forever.

When Jesus was finished talking with them, He was taken up into heaven to be with God. The disciples went everywhere and preached God's word.

Jesus ascension

Before Jesus left, he said to His disciples, "You believe because you have seen me.  Blessed are those who haven't seen me and believe anyway."
